What’s the Difference Between Beard Balm and Beard Oil?

You decided to grow out your beard, but you notice something else is happening: you’re getting dry skin and feeling itchy. This is especially true if you have naturally drier skin, as dry skin will cause you to itch – especially when first growing your beard.

It’s recommended that you use either beard balm or beard oil to relieve the itching and dry skin.

But what’s the difference between beard balm and beard oil? We’re going to be taking a look at these two different forms of relief so that you know which one is the perfect product for you.

The Main Difference: Beard Balm Vs Beard Oil

The texture of these two products are very different. Beard oil is a mix of essential oils that is applied to your skin. Better absorbed by the skin, the oil will be much easier to apply and moisten the skin effectively.

Beard balm also contains many essential oils, but also has the addition of beeswax. This wax makes the oils solid, and you’ll essentially massage the bomb into your skin. The main difference is the texture of the two products. Oils are obviously liquid, while balm is a softer solid.

Beard Balm

Beard balm comes in many different types, and you’ll massage this into your beard. The one main thing about beard balm is that it also acts as a beard holder. If you wanted to ensure your beard was in a specific position or looked picture-perfect, beard balm would provide you with the extra hold you need. This is much like gel or mousse does for a person’s hair.

Most men will choose beard balm when they need their beard to stay in place. If you’re going to a wedding and you have a beard, the bomb will not only hold your beard in place, but make you look fuller.

For longer beards, beard balm is often preferred.

This product will:

  • Enhance your beard’s fullness
  • Nourish and moisturize the skin
  • Allow for styling and control
  • Provides less of an abundant sent

Beard Oil

Beard oil is a good choice for shorter beards. Even if you have a longer beard, you’ll be able to use oil to moisturize your skin and alleviate dry skin. Oil will absorb into the skin faster, and it is very easy to apply.

Major benefits of beard oil include:

  • Enhance the softness of your beard
  • Nourish and moisturize the skin
  • Reduce itching and dandruff
  • Increase the shine of the beard and fullness
  • Provide a very rich scent

Beard oils are normally the product of choice for men with beards. Oil is very easy to apply, and you can find in virtually any beauty store. One of the most apparent differences between balm and oil is that the oil provides a much stronger smell. You can find apricot oil or peppermint oil among many other oil types that will give your beard a great scent.

And the only reason to choose balm over oil is if you want to have a greater control over your beard’s styling.

Otherwise, both of these products work great and they will alleviate much of the itching and “beardruff” that you experience.
